Battlefield 6 Cross Play Explained: PC, Xbox and Console Lobbies

Battlefield 6 has cross play on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it is on by default. On console, EA says matchmaking "will prioritize other players on console" and only matches you with PC players "if there aren't enough players on console." You can turn cross play off only on Xbox and PlayStation, in Settings, System. On PC there is no option, and EA says it has no current plans to add one.

How matchmaking works across platforms

EA Help says cross play "lets you play Battlefield with players on different platforms," for example an Xbox player with a PS5 player.

The detail that matters most for console players: "If you play on a console, cross-play matchmaking will prioritize other players on console. You'll only be matched with PC players if there aren't enough players on console."

How to turn cross play off on Xbox or PS5

From EA Help:

  1. Open Battlefield 6.
  2. Select the cog to open Settings.
  3. Select System.
  4. Under Setup, toggle Cross-play off.

Two rules EA lists:

  • With cross play off, "you can only play with people using the same platform as you."
  • You "can't change your cross-play settings if you're in a party, a server, or have started matchmaking." Leave the party or queue first.

On Xbox, there is also a console-wide privacy setting for cross-network play under Settings, General, Online safety & family, per Windows Central. That setting affects every supported game on the console, not only Battlefield 6. Use the in-game toggle if you only want to change Battlefield.

Turning cross play off can mean longer queues, since your pool is limited to one platform. EA does not publish queue times.

Can PC players turn off cross play?

No. EA answered this in its Season 5 community update: "we don't currently have plans to add an option for PC players to turn off Crossplay, as this would potentially negatively affect these efforts," referring to its matchmaking work and the upcoming Server Browser.

You may see guides that edit a settings file on PC to force cross play off. That is not an EA documented option, so we do not recommend it, and it may stop working or affect matchmaking after an update.

What changes with the Server Browser

EA says the Server Browser arrives in Season 5 Phase 3 on December 8, 2026, launching "side-by-side with our existing matchmaking system," with persistent lobbies.

Playing with friends on other platforms

  1. Press R2, RT or Tab to open EA Connect.
  2. Go to Player search and enter your friend's EA or platform ID.
  3. Select Add friend. They accept in the Friend requests tab.
  4. Invite them from the Party tab.

EA notes that if you add a platform friend as an EA friend, you can keep playing together if one of you moves to a different platform. Both of you need cross play on if you are on different platforms.

Does your platform choice matter for your key?

Your purchase is per platform. A Steam or EA app copy is for PC, and an Xbox copy is for Xbox Series X|S. Cross play does not give you the game on another platform. EA says progress is saved across platforms when your EA ID is linked to each one.
