Region Locked Steam Key: What Happens If You Bought the Wrong Region

A region locked key is a product that is only intended to work in certain countries or regions. A key marked for Europe, for example, may not work on an account registered outside Europe (Eneba). If your key will not activate, do this in order: keep the exact error message, do not try VPN tricks, contact the seller or marketplace support with proof, and read that seller's refund rules. To avoid it next time, compare the listing's region with your account's region before you pay. AskLoot shows the region label each seller gives.

How we rank

We may earn a commission when you buy through our links. Commission never changes which offers we pick or the order of the list. How we rank

Before you buy: match the listing's region to your account region

The label on a listing (GLOBAL, EUROPE, NA, LATAM and so on) tells you where the seller says the key is meant to work. What matters is the region of your account, which is not always the same as the country you are in right now (Eneba).

Read the whole listing, not only the label. Eneba notes that even a product marked GLOBAL can have country exceptions, and that these are usually shown in the listing's important notice or activation details (Eneba).

A quick checklist before you pay:

  • The platform is Steam.
  • The region tag matches your account region.
  • The important notice has no exception for your country.
  • The edition is the one you want.
  • Your VPN is off, or you have checked the region by hand. Eneba warns that a VPN can affect automatic location detection and lead you to pick the wrong region (Eneba).

After you buy: the key will not activate, what now

  1. Stop. Do not keep retrying or look for workarounds.
  2. Keep the error text. Take a screenshot of the activation message.
  3. Do not use a VPN. See the section below.
  4. Contact the seller or marketplace support with proof. Eneba lists the proof it may ask for: screenshots, error messages, platform responses, redemption attempts and account region details (Eneba).
  5. Read the refund policy of the store you bought from.

Refunds: what a published policy actually says

Refund rules differ by store. As one example, Eneba's refund article (checked 15 Oct 2026) says a key can be returned within 14 days of purchase in only two cases: before the code is viewed, or if there is an issue with the code itself, meaning it is invalid or was already used. It also says a refund is not possible if you change your mind after viewing the key (Eneba refund article).

Read the policy of the seller you bought from and check the date on it, because policies change.

Why VPN workarounds are a bad idea

Section 3.A of the Steam Subscriber Agreement says you agree not to use IP proxying or other methods to disguise the place of your residence, including to get around geographical restrictions on game content, and that if you do, Valve may terminate your access to your account (Steam Subscriber Agreement). A single key is not worth risking your account and library.

How AskLoot's region label helps

AskLoot is an AI deal finder for PC and Xbox game keys. You ask in plain English, for example "Red Dead Redemption 2 Rockstar key", and see offers with known fees added and a region label wherever the seller gives one. Every seller is clearly labeled, and the region label you see is the one that seller gives the key. Check it against your account region before you click through. If a seller gives no region, check the store page before you buy.

See how we rank for how offers are ordered, and our disclosure: AskLoot earns a commission on some purchases.

FAQ

What happens if I activate a key from the wrong region?

It may not activate on your account. Keep the error message and contact the seller or marketplace support with proof.

Can I get a refund for a wrong region key?

It depends on the seller's policy. Eneba's policy (checked 15 Oct 2026) allows a refund within 14 days only if the code was not viewed, or if the code is invalid or already used. Read your own seller's policy.

Can I change my Steam region to use the key?

We do not give workarounds. Using a VPN or proxy to disguise where you live is against section 3.A of the Steam Subscriber Agreement. For questions about your account, contact Steam Support.

Do Steam keys work in any country?

Not always. Some keys are only intended to work in certain regions, and even GLOBAL listings can have country exceptions. Check the full listing before you buy.

Is a region locked key a scam?

No. A region lock is a restriction on where the key is meant to work. The risk is buying a key for the wrong region, so check before you pay.
